Application Prospects of Intelligent Digital Charger

At present, the most promising chargers in the charger market are the intelligent digital battery chargers, which are determined by the unparalleled advantages of the electric vehicles. With the advantages such as low noise, little pollution to the environment, there are great development prospects and market potential. Especially in today's international society under the background of advocating environmental protection and energy saving technology, this advantage is more and more obvious.
At present, electric vehicles have been sold on the market, but there are also a lot of problems which has not been solved or solved well. The battery capacity is too small, so it can't provide continuous power. The charging time is too long and the charging efficiency is not high. Either overcharge or undercharge are often occurred, which seriously affect the battery service life. Many users' feedback focused on the short service life of the battery. At the same time, the charging technology for such batteries is not very mature, and there is much to be done for charger designing.

With the rapid development of modern electronic technology, the application of microelectronic products provides a broad market prospect for a battery using widely, especially during the popularity of MP3, digital cameras, smartphone and laptop. In recent years, with the increasing maturity of the technology, rechargeable batteries are replacing the non-rechargeable battery market with rapid development trend.

Rechargeable batteries can not only provide continuous power supply to the devices which consume large power but also reduce environmental pollution. Modern rechargeable batteries include Nickel-cadmium battery (Ni-Cd), nickel metal hydride (Ni-Mn) batteries. Please note: although the nickel-cadmium battery is still sold on the market, it has been stopped manufacturing and using due to the heavy metal cadmium pollution and memory effect and other shortcomings.

Therefore, the intelligent digital battery charger designed in this paper is for nickel metal hydrogen battery. The popularization of rechargeable batteries requires more and more technologies. The commercially available charger has many design defects such as long charging time, small charging current and no protection capability. These design defects have great harm to the rechargeable battery and shorten the service life of the battery. The principle of charger design: to meet the application requirements, the common electronic components are used as far as possible, expensive integrated circuit chips are avoided to use, which is easy to produce and reduce costs.

The development status of intelligent charger: intelligent chip plus auxiliary circuit are adapted to form the charger, so, the cost is higher, which eventually lead to the high price. This is the reason that commercial charger with the rough design still occupies the market.

The intelligent charger can automatically change the work modes according to the three stages of battery charging status, which not only can protect the battery and extend the battery cycle life, but also can improve the charging efficiency and shorten the charging time.
